Abigail Spanberger was sworn in as Virginia’s 74th Governor on Saturday, January 17, becoming the first woman to hold the office in the history of the commonwealth. This moment marks a significant shift in Virginia politics, especially following Glenn Youngkins’ upset win back in 2021. As Spanberger took her oath, a palpable sense of excitement filled the air among many Virginians for what the future holds. Her inauguration followed a decisive victory in the November 2025 election, where she secured 57.6 percent of the vote to defeat Republican Winsome Earle-Sears, who received 42.2 percent of the votes. Spanberger spent the next three months crafting a plan for a Virginia that is more affordable and accepting. Onlookers from both sides of the political spectrum and from all 50 states are eagerly anticipating whether Spanberger will commit to the promises that propelled her to the lucrative spot.
During her inaugural speech, Spanberger signaled a shift in Virginia’s political direction. She directly addressed the tensions throughout the United States, stating “I know many of you are worried about the recklessness coming out of Washington” Without naming the President she criticized policies she claimed had “betrayed the value of who we are as Americans” and “broke the social safety net. Visually representing this new era, she broke tradition by wearing a white suit- A nod to the women’s suffrage movement, rather than the dark suits usually worn by her predecessors.
No matter how important and serious this time in Politics is, the moment was historic and deserved to be celebrated. The inaugural ball was a glittering affair, Spanberger addressed the crowd, the speech was a powerful mix of gratitude and resolve. But as soon as the speech ended, the party began, with a special surprise from Virginia native Dave Matthews of the aptly named Dave Matthews Band, who performed at the ball for all the guests.
Spanberger took no time to take action, on her first day she signed 10 executive orders focused on affordability and policy reform. First she ordered all executive branch agencies to identify immediate ways to reduce expenses for living. To address the education issues she ordered the Virginia department of education to strengthen literacy and mathematics instruction while reviewing the current programs. She also addressed immigration by rescinding a previous order that encouraged state and local law enforcement to assist with federal civil immigration enforcement. She is using her first days to show her commitment to unity and progress for all of Virginia. She has acknowledged that there will be challenges to this process, but continues to believe in the state’s ability to come together. The ball was not just a party, it was a symbol of hope and the subsequent actions the next day are clear indications of the direction that the commonwealth will be taking.
