Twenty years later, Andy Sachs is back at Runway. But this time she isn’t there to hang up Miranda Priestly’s coats, she is there to help Miranda with fashion in digital media.
The highly-awaited sequel, directed by David Frankel, has grossed over $433 million globally in just two weeks. Along with that, the original cast is back, nostalgic as ever, with Anne Hathaway as Andy Sachs, Meryl Streep as Miranda Priestly, Emily Blunt as Emily Charlton and Stanley Tucci as Nigel.
What made The Devil Wears Prada 2 nostalgic wasn’t just the return of the original cast but also use of iconic lines from the first movie such as “Look what T.J. Maxx dragged in”. Certain scenes also referenced the first movie such as Andy’s intro scene being identical and Miranda hanging up her own coat.
As for characters, Miranda Priestly was done wrong. Her icy demeanor and uncompromising perfectionism was thawing away in The Devil Wears Prada 2. Sure, that might be because of the impact of social media on fashion taking away Miranda’s integrity but watching Miranda Priestly compromising on anything felt immoral.
In terms of acting, “I thought they [cast of The Devil Wears Prada] did a good job. It was just a little bit awkward on Anne Hathaway’s part” said Muskitta. “I think the acting was pretty good but some of the newer actors could’ve done better,” said Raina Mehfooz, a BWHS freshman.
The storyline was filmic and used a great deal of high-end designer brands. Unfortunately, a portion of the scenes felt like an advert to some of the viewers. “I thought the set and cinematography was very well done, but it looked very commercial,” said Katrina Muskitta, a sophomore at BWHS.
Viewers of the movie enjoyed how the storyline synced up to present times, “I liked how they added the social media influence on magazines, but I feel like they could have done more to express that we need magazines again in journalism” said Muskitta.
Unlike its parent film, The Devil Wears Prada 2 was intent on wrapping up each character’s story arc. Hence it lacked the openture seen in The Devil Wears Prada. Some fans didn’t like how that vibe changed but others loved the closure that was missing in the original film. “I feel like we needed more to the story. We needed to know more about Andy and what happens later after she’s all grown up, not freshly out of college,” said Mehfooz.
In the end, The Devil Wears Prada 2 did great for a sequel. The main thing everyone loved was the reunion of the original cast. It’s definitely worth watching for fans of the first film and closure.
