Rescue and recovery work has begun after states grapple with the destruction left in Hurricane Helene’s wake. After touching down in Florida as a devastating category 4 hurricane, it continued to trail up the east coast, bringing floods and high winds to Georgia, the carolinas, Tennessee, and Virginia. The death toll from these states is currently at 120, according to The Associated Press, and continues to climb. Hundreds are unaccounted for as communities within high floodwaters await aid. Additionally, three million are left without power and roads, dams, and other infrastructure are left in ruins. President Biden has stated to npr reporters that his administration is “giving states everything they have” in order to have an efficient recovery. Schools closed in response to the hurricane are set to open within the next coming week.
