The Presidential Debate between former President Trump and Vice President Harris occurred September 10 on the ABC network. This was the first time the two had debated, since the initial debate occurred in June, between Trump and Biden. This being said, the debate was very similar to the one between Trump and Biden, as far as the rules go. Both candidates had two minutes to answer questions, two minutes for rebuttals, and an additional minute for clarifications.
Harris’ closing statements brought up numerous ideas and plans for what she plans to accomplish during her term. One idea of note was what she calls an “opportunity economy”, which would give tax cuts to small businesses, young families, and senior citizens. Further, she claims she will expand the military, as well as promote abortion rights.
As for Trump’s closing statement, he claims that America is losing its leadership role, and that we are being laughed at by other countries. He also brought up the fact that Harris has been in office for three and a half years now. As a result, Trump questions that, if she promises all these things, then why has she not tried to or done them already. Finally, he also mentioned how one of Harris’ responsibilities as vice president was to maintain the border and keep illegal immigrants out, but during her term, the border has allowed for more people to enter.
To conclude, the debate was lively and full of popular topics that could sway the election. Only time will tell if it will have any effect on who will be entering the White House in January.
