A 24-year-old modern popstar and producer, PinkPantheress, released her second mixtape Fancy That, on May 9. This most recent body of work follows her previous album released back in 2023, Heaven knows, but takes a step up with polished production and lyricism.
Two singles were put out prior to the release of the album, “Tonight” and “Stateside,” music videos that added the playful feeling of Pink’s music.
The album launches with the beginning track “Illegal,” which follows in PinkPantheress’ philosophy behind songs, that they don’t need to be long at all. Standing at only 2 minutes and 29 seconds, the song is a synth-pop opener that gives a little context to what Pink as an artist sounds like. Her unique sound pulls together busy beats stacked with her light voice on top.
Further in, Pink sets up the album’s main feel, a nostalgic reach to the early 2000s and the UK-garage scene with tracks like “Stars” and “Nice to Know You.” The album’s cover art follows a similar kitschy but camp look, solidifying the y2k aesthetic.
“Romeo” closes off the album as the final track, based on Shakespeare’s classic love story Romeo and Juliet, as the title suggests, but told in a pop song instead. Put together, the album is clean, more mature than her previous works, but still fun and exciting, as expected of Pink.
