The Briar Woods High School’s Falconaires won fourth place in a color guard competition, Oakton Classic, at Oakton High School on Oct. 18. The Falcon Regiment (marching band and colorguard) placed fifth while color guard alone placed fourth out of the six schools present. The Falcon Regiment’s theme was “Escape the Lost Pyramid”. The performance showcased various sound effects and Egyptian themed props such as pyramids, hieroglyphic walls and a mummy.
The Falconaires had a wonderful time performing and won Fan Favorite (when the audience votes for their favorite guard team). The Falconaires’ co-captain Lillian Munden, a Briar Woods senior, expresses her excitement. “I believe this is my first time with the Falcon Regiment winning Fan Favorite in a marching band competition” said Munden, who is in her fourth year of color guard. “It’s a very exciting show so it’s nice to know that the crowd really enjoyed it,” said color guard coach Olivia Monseur.
The color guard performance received a total score of 79.50. It was captivating to an untrained eye but to a professional: “It was a fine performance. It wasn’t the best one they’ve [Falconaires] ever put forth. The first two competitions we did get first place in color guard and so getting fourth was a little bit of a surprise to us and the team,” commented coach Monseur.
In these competitions, the Falconaires normally place within the first three positions. The Falconaires were up against different schools than they normally compete against. When asked about the Falconaires’ position in fourth, Munden replied “I do think we deserve to place fourth because honestly we worked really really hard and every single day that we practice, we just keep getting better and better,”. “There were things that don’t normally happen ended up happening, like people were dropping equipment that they normally don’t drop – so I understand why we got the scoring that we did,” said coach Monseur.
Now as the season is gradually ending. The Falconaires have a final football game performance on Oct. 25 and a colorguard assessment on Oct. 26. “I’m very confident about it [assessment] because our scores are already where they need to be, I know that we’re gonna do really well,” said Munden.
