Briar Woods High School has a small but meaningful free book cart located in one of its main hallways, and it has become a popular stop for many students. The cart holds old books that students are welcome to take at any time during the school day. There is no checkout process, no sign-up sheet, and no need to return the books after reading them. The goal of the project is to make reading easy, stress-free, and open to everyone, no matter how busy their schedule may be.

The free book cart includes many different types of books, such as popular novels, graphic novels, and school help books for classes like math, science, and English. Because the books come from old library collections, the selection is always changing. Teachers and librarians help restock the cart when old books become available.

According to students, the cart is especially helpful for those who may not have time to visit the school library during lunch or after school.

“It’s simple and you don’t have to go through the library,” one student said. “You can just grab a book and go to your next class.”

Another student said the cart made it easier to try reading without feeling pressured.

“I don’t usually go to the library, but when I walk by and see something interesting, I’ll take it,” the student said. “It makes reading feel less like schoolwork.”

Students also say that the books often disappear quickly, especially popular titles and graphic novels. By the end of the day, the cart is sometimes almost empty, showing how many students are interested in reading when books are easy to access. Many students appreciate that there is no pressure to return the book, which allows them to keep it, share it with friends, or continue reading at home.

Teachers involved in the project say the cart helps remove common barriers to reading, such as limited time, transportation, or access to books outside of school. However, the free book cart is not always available and runs off and on depending on how many old books the school has to place on the cart.

For now, the free book cart is gone until more old books become available
