Feel like a trip to Florida? Maybe you should rethink that decision. A massive tornado created by Hurricane Milton just made its way through Florida, destroying everything in its path, killing at least 14 people and leaving 3 million without power.
The tornado destroyed everything from homes to major sports venues. The Tropicana Field stadium experienced major damage – more can be found in Kelan Brophy’s article “Hurricane Milton Destroys Ray’s Roof” on the Falcon Flyer. The tornado also flooded many neighborhoods and ripped a crane off of a building which then fell into a nearby office building. Keith Brown, a senior citizen living in Florida only a few blocks away from a beach says “I live in Cape Canaveral, Florida near the Kennedy Space center and the eye of Milton was to pass south of us but on that morning of 10 October I got a frantic text message from my daughter saying that the eye had shifted and was know coming straight over Cape Canaveral. That shook me up so I hurriedly packed a bag and jumped in my car to evacuate to Virginia.”
Despite Hurricane Milton being the worst hurricane in Florida since Hurricane Katrina in August of 2005, many Floridians have not been taking it seriously. On Tiktok, there are videos of Floridians dancing to Michael Jackson songs in the rain and wind, standing in the flood waters that reach up to their shoulders, and people walking against the wind eating McDonalds or Crumbl Cookies.
Hurricane Milton leaves Florida with loss and destruction, taking over 30 lives and leaving 3.2 million without power. The U.S. can help Florida by sending teams down to rebuild homes and buildings and comfort people struggling with loss of homes, family, friends and much more.
