On Sept. 20, 2024, the Briar Woods Falcons played their homecoming game against the North Stafford Wolverines.
The first quarter started off slow, with neither team scoring any touchdowns. The second quarter picked up pace when North Stafford scored a rushing touchdown and the extra point, giving the Wolverines a 7-0 lead. Briar Woods completed a pass for a touchdown, but missed the extra point, keeping the Falcons trailing 7-6 behind the Wolverines. North Stafford with a 65 yard rushing touchdown and PAT advanced to an eight-point lead, ending the second quarter 14-6.
Much of the Briar Woods student body, discouraged by the large lead that the Wolverines held, opted to leave the game early, leaving the Falcons’ football team lacking in support from home.
Going into the third quarter, North Stafford’s Running Back, Micah Brown made a 70 yard rushing touchdown, further discouraging the remainder of Briar Woods’ fans in the bleachers of any chance of gaining the lead now that the score was 20-6. Later in the third quarter, Briar Woods scored a 20 yard rushing touchdown and completed a pass for a two-point conversion, closing in on the Wolverines lead, the score now 20-14. North Stafford’s Brown scored a 45 yard rushing touchdown in the last minute of the third quarter to secure their lead for the remainder of the game.
The Falcons fought to score another touchdown in the fourth quarter, but fell short, ending their game in an unfortunate 24-14 loss. “The major [reason we lost] was the amount of missed tackles we had and how the ball carrier would get past either most or all of the defense during a lot of the plays,” says Jake Hoyler, sophomore defensive end.
