In Chantilly VA, school buses are being equipped with a new AI security system that ensures students’ safety. Buspatrol, the company behind the technology, describes how the system works: cameras go on the top of the bus and detect when a car drives around a stopped school bus. The car’s license plate is captured and footage is sent out to law enforcement. An employee of Buspatrol, states “We want to make sure all the drivers in America are stopping when they see a school bus stopped.” As for now, there is no indication that this will be implemented in Loudoun County schools’ buses, but an anonymous sophomore says they “hope it will be because it is a very dangerous issue for students, especially younger kids in elementary or middle school.” As more school districts adopt the latest safety technology, it will be valuable to see data that proves a decline in accidents directly related to BusPatrol. Statistics citing fewer incidents might just influence Loudoun to follow Fairfax County’s lead.
