Kardashian Under Fire:

Kim Kardashian isn’t new to headlines, but this time, it isn’t for her fashion line or famous family. Her new Hulu series, All’s Fair, has exploded online, and not in the way she probably hoped. Critics are tearing it apart, while fans are tuning in anyway, trying to understand what’s causing the backlash. This tension between harsh reviews and rising curiosity has turned the show into one of the most talked about premieres of the season

Critics Call it a “Crime Against Television”:

The show premiered Nov. 4, and critics responded almost immediately with intense backlash.

Ed Power of The Telegraph called the series “a crime against television.”

Lucy Mangan of The Guardian described it as “fascinatingly, incomprehensibly, existentially terrible.”

And according to The Hollywood Reporter, critic Angie Han said Kardashian’s performance was “stiff and affectless without a single authentic note.”

On Rotten Tomatoes, the show currently sits at 3%, which basically means critics almost all agree it’s not good.

Audiences Keep Watching:

Despite the reviews, viewers haven’t turned away. In fact, interest appears to be growing. On Nov. 6, report from RadarOnline by Mike Boyce said ratings “skyrocket[ed]” as people streamed the series specifically to see whether the backlash was deserved.

Across social media platforms, discussions, clips, and reactions show that audiences are watching not just for entertainment but to understand if it’s worth liking.

Cast and Creators Defend the Series:

Though the outside noise was significant, the cast and crew didn’t let it bother them.

Director and executive producer Anthony Hemingway told The Guardian, “not everything is for everybody . . . you may have certain criticisms, while there are a million others who love it . . . it may not be for you, and that’s okay. You’re not going to please everybody.”

Co-star Naomi Watts also spoke out in support of Kardashian, telling People, “I have so much respect for her. A businesswoman taking a huge great leap into acting. A new arena? And unapologetically so.”

A Complicated Acting Transition:

A lot of the drama comes from the fact that Kim isn’t starting from scratch. She’s one of the most famous people in the world, and everyone already has an opinion on her. That makes it harder for people to see her as a “regular” new actor, because she’s been in the spotlight for so long.

Which makes one ask, can a celebrity built on reality TV be taken seriously in scripted acting?

The Verdict:

Whether the show becomes a guilty pleasure or guilty of trying too hard, one thing is clear: people are watching, talking, and debating.

Critics have rested their case but the jury of audiences still hasn’t agreed on a verdict.
