The Met Gala is an annual fundraising event that supports the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute in New York City. It is considered one of the world’s most prestigious fashion events with a limited guest list of only high-profile celebrities with individual tickets reaching $75,000.
The 2024 Met Gala was held on May 6th, celebrating the Costume Institute’s new exhibition of “Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion,” following the official dress code of “The Garden of Time.” According to Vogue, “This year’s exhibit, ‘Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion,’ examines how technology can breathe new life into garments that are too old and fragile to be worn again.” Attendees embraced the concept by dressing in floral patterns and designs inspired by nature, resulting in the red carpet looking like a living garden.
Celebrities appeared in their different approaches to the theme, highlighting a unique look into fashion.
Gigi Hadid was seen with an white off-the-shoulder dress with a voluminous skirt filled with yellow flowers and a dark lining. Hadid’s captivating dress took a team of over 70 people, taking almost 14,000 hours to make by hand. “It’s an honor for me to be able to present this for them, and I always walk the carpet with that in mind. I’m very proud of their work,” stated Gigi Hadid in Vogue magazine.
Singer, Tyla, appeared at her first Met Gala with a unique look of a Balmain sand dress, sculpted to her body. Many fans were awed by her distinctive selection of wearing sand and she explains that the dress was meant to express the passing of time as can also be seen by her hourglass purse. Although it was a challenge walking in her dress and taking a seat, Tyla simply replied to E! News, “Who cares guys? I’m cute!”
Zendaya came to the Met Gala with not one, but two charming dresses. She arrived with a blue, green and black dress with fake grapes, a feather in her hair, with a veil, adding a mysterious vibe. Her makeup accentuated her outfit, highlighting a dark feminine look. Zendaya’s appearance with a different dress wowed everyone just as she first did. Wearing a long black Givenchy dress, she also included a bouquet of flowers wrapped around her head.
“Although her outfits for this year’s Met Gala didn’t stand out to me as much as her previous ones, I really enjoyed her dark makeup this year,” stated an anonymous junior at Briar Woods.
Whereas many celebrities matched the theme with their bedazzling outfits, others had brought out criticism from Met Gala viewers.
Doja Cat’s outfit of arrival for the Met Gala astonished viewers creating a controversy with her looks. She wore a white gown–or a wet t-shirt as many viewers say. Paired with her gown, her makeup included glittery teardrops and a smokey eye. Many fans found her outfit unreasonable, but she explains that she wanted her look to be unique. “I know that people are going to do flowers, but my flower of choice is the most-used flower. And it’s cotton,” said Doja Cat to Entertainment Tonight.
