A hobby to many, a profession to others, running is practiced by a wide range of people due to its many benefits. From the heart to the knees, running benefits many parts of the body in different ways.
Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in the United States; however, the American Heart Association estimates that up to 90 percent of cardiovascular disease can be prevented. Running has many benefits to the heart, WebMD states that “Running for at least 10 minutes a day can significantly lower your risk of cardiovascular disease. Runners lower their chances of dying from heart disease by half.”
Immunity is also improved by running as stated by, “When you do aerobic exercises like running at least 5 days a week, you lower your odds of upper tract respiratory infections by 43%,” states WebMD. Additionally, consistent running can reduce a person’s resting heart, improving overall health.
Running also carries a mental and social benefit, as stated by Cinga.com “Running can control stress and boost the body’s ability to deal with existing mental tension. Exercise also increases concentrations of norepinephrine, a chemical that helps moderate the brain’s response to stress.” allowing runners to live both physically and mentally healthier lives.
