On Thursday, Oct. 24, Grace Ocean Private Ltd., the owner of the ship that led to the collapse of Baltimore’s Francis Key Scott bridge, reached a settlement of approximately $102 million with the Justice Department in a civil lawsuit.
On March 26, 2024, the bridge collapsed after a cargo ship collided into it, with the lawsuit following several months later. The federal government filed the lawsuit so that the money may be distributed to pay those who aided in the cleanup.
The Maryland Justice Department has filed a separate lawsuit to rebuild the bridge, though a settlement has not yet been reached. The cost of rebuilding the bridge is estimated to be over $2 billion. Alongside the two major lawsuits, there are still a vast amount of civilian claims filed against the company.
The many claims and lawsuits filed against the Singaporean based company are likely to continue on for the foreseeable future, however, it is unclear whether they will all be settled or go to court.
