As the leaves turn to different shades of red and orange, some look forward to pumpkin spice or the change in weather, and, for many, fall means football season is here. The air is filled with the scent of fallen leaves and the distant sounds of the marching band. Cheerleaders perform their routine while the crisp autumn breeze blows into the stands, signaling that the game is about to begin.
Fall brings celebrations including football and Thanksgiving; the cool weather, a sign it’s time to change out of shorts and into a sweater. Events like football games help families and loved ones to bond and create special memories to cherish.
“We spend the whole fall immersed in football,” says Lucia Curry, Administrative Assistant and Cheerleading Coach at Briar Woods High School. “When it’s warm enough that I don’t have to wear a coat or boots to the games, but the leaves are changing and the sun is still setting, that’s beautiful to me.”
Fall football season provides many comforts and brings communities together to create a sense of family and togetherness. The excitement of the season, the rivalries and the teams make the season something people eagerly look forward to. Teams often bring people together, but sometimes people bring each other to love a team.
“My husband is a Steelers fan, [and so] that makes me a Steelers fan, since I always end up watching the games with him,” says Shannon Gresh, a school counselor at Briar Woods High School.
Although football is a large part of the fall season, there are many other festivities that bring families and friends together, encouraging stronger bonds and reconnections, even at the dinner table.
“I [love] celebrating thanksgiving because we usually get together as a family, and make a big meal,” says Gresh. “My favorite [dish] is green bean casserole, but we also enjoy turkey, mac cheese, and stuffing.” Gresh further explains that the whole holiday is a family bonding experience for her, similar to football.
Fall brings up varieties of fall holidays and feelings for everyone, and for many, fall is all about the cozy atmosphere it brings, especially at football games.
“I love fall clothes, boots, sweaters, scarfs- all that fun stuff,” says Curry. She elaborates that she enjoys wearing fall clothes to games since it makes her feel “warm and in spirit.”
Fall is a season that beautifully ties people together with sports like football to holidays like Thanksgiving. The excitement of football games and festivals brings communities and friends closer, creating a shared joy. The comfort and cozy atmosphere of fall, with its crisp air and vibrant foliage, enhances these special moments. All together, fall is a time of family, friends, and cherished traditions, making it a season everyone looks forward to.
