On Oct. 23, 2024, the Briar Woods varsity field hockey team went into their last game of the season against Independence High School, ending with a 7-8 overall record. Though they lost the game 2-0, the team looks back on the season with pride.
The match was close, with Independence holding a narrow two point lead by the second quarter. However, the Falcons remained hot on their heels, keeping the game tense and competitive until the very end. The team put a lot of pressure on the Independence Tigers, maintaining control of the field and keeping the play primarily near the opponents’ goal.
“Since Independence is the top team in our district, I knew they were going to put up a big fight and it would be difficult to win. We ended up keeping the score close, the closest in all the seasons I have been on the team,” commented Allison Strier, senior.
It was their last game of the season but it was also senior night, adding to the heightened emotions.
Strier reflected on the bittersweetness of the moment, saying, “I felt super supported by all the friends and family that came out tonight. Even though it is sad that I will not be playing this time next year, I am so grateful to be a part of this team.”
Sahasra Potturi, sophomore, added to this, mentioning, “I wanted to give my all to this game to honor our seniors.”
Overall, the team has been working hard this season, consistently attending 6:30 a.m. practices and strengthening their play and team dynamics.
“It’s my second year playing and I’ve had a great time on the team and with this sport,” Potturi explained enthusiastically.
“The coaches are both wonderful and make the team so welcoming. Everyone on the team has a great dynamic and we have been able to have a good record this season,” Strier said in her final statement.
Despite the recent losses, the team is in high spirits, closing the season with a smile.
