October 7, 2024, one year of conflict between Israel and Gaza, and as this year progressed there has been an unmeasurable damage done to families and nations. Since the first surprise attack launched by Hamas, “Israel responded by declaring war,” the suffering growing unrelentingly, “thousands have been reportedly killed or injured,” says ABC news.
North Africa and the Middle east has been scared from a political, security, and societal standpoint, says the Atlantic Council. They say, “One year on, the Gaza War remains unresolved and the potential for war across the region is becoming more likely” It is not only affecting the Israeli and Palestinian people but also the surrounding areas as the nations near a potential war, with catastrophic consequences.
Doctors Without Borders says, “As conflict spreads across the region, an immediate and sustained ceasefire is needed more than ever.” The medical and humanitarian situation is cataclysmic. Prior to the war Gaza’s healthcare system was already fragile, this war tipped the balance causing the entire system to shatter when it was most needed. Often, when people were displaced they were forced into smaller areas and had no access to food, water, or medicine they desperately needed.
Doctors Without Borders reports the attack on Gaza has so far, “killed more than 41,500 people, wounded 96,000, and displaced approximately 1.9 million people.”
PBS reports that, “Only seventeen out of thirty-six hospitals were partially functioning,” as of September 2024.
With the upcoming presidential election in the United States, the reactions to the war have divided between partisan lines. How the United States reacts to this war in the upcoming term is a pressing issue for both sides of the election.
This war matters to a lot of people, and the longer it continues the more people are going to suffer. The fact of the matter is, regardless of what oceans and borders separate the people of the world, there is a lot of attention on this war, and a lot of people that care about what happens.
The marking of one year of this conflict has aroused people to hold vigils and protests all around the world as the situation worsens, all that’s left to wonder is how much more damage will be caused?
