Summer is iconic for the long breaks and trips to the beach. Schools out and everyone goes their separate ways for two months, but what happens to the teachers? Over the summer teachers are no longer working long hours in school and out of school to teach, grade, review and help out their students, but what does the idea of summer break mean to teachers? With planning and preparing for the next year is there really a summer break for them?
Cameron Pirnat, a student at Briar Woods, says, “I don’t really know what my teachers do over the summer, I haven’t really thought about it.” This is the case for most students where after school ends the amount of effort that teachers put in is not noticed very often.
Teachers are mainly active during the school year when they are in the classrooms but during the summer they have options for attending meetings and training to help students or they work on curriculum. There is need for teachers on all levels from need at each specific school and need at the county level. Mia Burgess, a teacher at Briar woods, says, “Some teachers come in for meetings or others work on curriculum and there are a lot of meetings that are optional for teachers to attend over the summer in school as well as on the county level.”
Teachers take advantage of the summer time to pursue their own hobbies and interests while enjoying their free time. Burgess says, “I love to take a break and meet family and friends, and take a break from work so that I can come back fresh for the next year.”
However, despite the low time when it comes to work during the summer, many times you can find the teachers still working to prepare for the upcoming school year to better help the next year of students.
Teachers are always hard at work to help improve for their students and in many cases they continue to assist students through the summer. It is not uncommon for teachers to also help out with summer school, tutoring, or other ways of enriching students.
For the amount of work teachers put in to make the ten months of school go by as smoothly as they do the teachers deserve more credit. While students are off taking a break during the summer teachers don’t stop teaching, learning, and helping, in the hot months that call for a break.
