For the past nearly 75 years, the world has been in the information age with new technology coming out and revolutionizing the way humans live their lives. One of the newest technological inventions comes in the form of a car. Or is it a tank? 

The Tesla Cybertruck is an electric, bulletproof car, with the 2024 model already being sold out after the first models were delivered last fall. According to Fortune, the Cybertruck has over 2 million people on the waiting list. Before the first deliveries in late 2023, the wait time was reportedly calculated to be over 4 years long, says Drive. 

Many people wonder why there is such a high demand for this car. What is different about this car that other cars do not have? Other than a futuristic design, the Tesla Cybertruck seems to many like a waste of money, as the 2024 Cybertruck can cost from $81, 895 to $101,985, according to Car and Driver. 

Ira Jadhav, a freshman at Briar Woods, says “I just don’t see what the point is to buy such an expensive car. For the price and wait time, I don’t think there is a reason for the Cybertruck to be in such high demand.”

Reuters says that the Cybertruck does have various unique features which make it so highly in-demand. Not only can the Cybertruck run for a lot longer than most electric cars, it also has a power that has almost never been seen, being able to tow up to 11,000 pounds and being able to go from 0 to 60 miles per hour in 2.6 seconds.

As Aryan Dotiwalla, a junior at Briar Woods, says, “The Cybertruck is just a really cool car, I would imagine it feels like a futuristic spaceship. I like the fact that it looks so unique.”

However, the Cybertruck is not all good news. Not only have some users reported that its stainless steel exterior rusts in the rain, but some Cybertruck owners have gotten alerts of a potential power, steering, and propulsion failure, says The New York Times. There was even a voluntary recall on these Cybertrucks due to a risk of the accelerator pedal being loose and potentially getting stuck and causing the vehicle to go into maximum acceleration, according to The Guardian. 

In the end, just like every other car, the Tesla Cybertruck has its fair share of pros and cons. Whether or not to buy it is up to the potential buyer and their needs. However, one thing is for certain: If more cars like the Cybertruck are in the market in the future, the world will be one big ‘Blade Runner’ movie.
