From colorful north face jackets to chunky western style boots, it is definitely safe to say that winter fashion has had its ups and downs over the years. After a fashion filled past couple of warmer months, the climate is starting to cool, which means people will be switching their wardrobes to more weather fitting options.
With trends constantly changing , it is hard to say what is in and out for the season, which is why opinions from the general public and economics are useful. It is also important to keep in mind that winter is just a reflection of the previous trends the public has had over the years, meaning that there might not be any drastic changes in fashion choice.
For many years, skinny jeans have been a must-have in feminine coded clothing and even many masculine wardrobes during the wintertime. Although these jeans are great for the cold winter, baggy clothing has had a bigger emphasis on this year’s fashion choices. That is why most people are opting for the 90s high waisted jeans rather than the skinny ones. In fact, Business Insider claims that the 90s high waisted jeans are “much more modern” which is not only ironic but also a popular opinion.
“One thing I think that is definitely going to be this year is baggy jeans for sure. I think so because they just give off a very sleek but retro vibe which is perfect for winter.” said Roshni Rao, a sophomore at BWHS.
Other than clothing types, many magazines like GLAMOUR predict a specific color palette that will be consistently showing up in outfits. New Tess, a fabric company in specific, thinks the palette will consist of the colors that go from red to gray, yellow to brown, and pink. Predictions for this color palette were formulated because of the clothing type people are opting towards this winter. Most people are buying baggy pants or cargo pants and then a simple sweater to go on top. As a result of the cold weather, the colors are more neutral-toned and go well with the baggy addition. This style is inclusive to all ages which is perfect for the fashion market/industry.
According to Forbes, street style is something to also look out for during these colder months. 2 articles of clothing that might be really popular are oversized cargo pants and puffer vests. These 2 things have been on the market for years, but they recently have been more popular and have been getting sold out from popular stores way quicker than usual. In fact, American Eagle itself has more than 5 different types of vests for this season.
“Cargos have always been really nice, but they suit the winter weather the most. You can get them in so many different colors and styles which makes them easily accessible. I also like how they can be altered in how thick you want them to be.” said Saisree Nagarakanti, a sophomore at Chantilly highschool.
Flannels have been seen in winter fashion for years. However this year, they started to pop up very vigorously in January. According to CrossRoads Style, a fashion blog, “this year sees flannel fashion going on again.” Many people claim that flannels have become a cozy staple for those who want to look stylish, but still don’t want to work hard to pick a presentable outfit. Due to the high demand of flannels over the past couple of months, Business Insider even wrote an article on which ones are the best to purchase and will fit the weather the best!
“Every time my outfit is plain, I just put a flannel over it.” said Taran Simhadri, a sophomore from BWHS.
Besides the fashion, the winter time has many good prices due to Black Friday and Christmas, so winter fashion is much more accessible than others. All things considered, winter is definitely the season where people get to express their own sense of style. The cozy outfits are such a crowd pleaser and it fills the whole fashion market with multiple different colors and even styles which makes it so inclusive. These months are so beautiful with crisp air and snowy evenings, that adding a little touch of fashion adds to the whole ambiance.
